Fortunately, there are a number of scholarships available to help children of single-parent homes attend college. These awards can make earning a degree more attainable for children who otherwise would not be able to afford it.
Raise the Nation Foundation Child of a Single Parent Woman Scholarship
The Raise the Nation Foundation sponsors several scholarships and grants for single women and their children. The Child of a Single Parent Woman Scholarship is available to dependent children of single women who may not qualify for other types of financial assistance due to their dependent status. To apply, you must be under the age of 24 and your mother must claim you as a dependent on federal and state tax filings. Scholarships in varying amounts are available to students who are enrolled or planning to enroll in an accredited post-secondary degree program.

Crane Fund for Widows and Children Scholarship
If you're a student attending Indiana University and the child of a single parent who is a widow, you may qualify for a scholarship from the Crane Fund for Widows and Children. To apply for a scholarship, you must be enrolled in the university's school of Applied Health Science, either at the undergraduate or graduate level. In addition to being the child of a widow, you must be able to demonstrate financial need to be considered for an award. The minimum scholarship available is $750 and awards may vary based on individual circumstances and available funding.

Carolina Covenant Scholarship
If you're a student from a single parent household enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Carolina Covenant Scholarship program can potentially meet 100 percent of your financial need in paying for college. To qualify for a Carolina Covenant award, you must be considered a dependent, enrolled full-time and pursuing your first undergraduate degree. Your family's adjusted gross income must be at or below the university's established limits for financial need based on family size. The program covers education costs for up to four years of study and in addition, some students will also qualify to receive a university grant to allow them to purchase a laptop computer.

American Legion Legacy Scholarship
If you are a child of a single parent who lost a spouse as a result of active duty military service, you may be eligible for an American Legion Legacy Scholarship. To apply, you must be a dependent child of a surviving parent and be a current high school senior or recent high school graduate. The award is eligible only for those children whose parent died during active-duty service on or following September 11, 2001. Scholarship awards are available in varying amounts for undergraduate study at an accredited college or university in the U.S.
