Think you may be pregnant? A home pregnancy test such as an EPT test is an easy way to detect the presence of pregnancy hormones in the urine. The test is 99 percent accurate in detecting the presence of pregnancy hormone. Correctly reading an EPT pregnancy test can make a life-changing difference. Begin by taking the test. Grip the test with your thumb, then urinate on the test or dip the test in a clean container of urine. Wait at least two minutes before reading the results.

Step 1

Observe the test's square window: a blue line should appear in this window. This indicates you have correctly performed the test.

Step 2

Wait two minutes after urinating on the pregnancy test before lifting the stick. This is the best way to allow the urine to stay on the test, which will give you the best results.

Step 3

Watch the round window for a blue positive ( + ) sign—this indicates you are pregnant. Many people expect for the plus sign to be a very deep blue, but the shade may vary from light blue to deep blue—regardless of the depth of color, a positive sign indicates you are pregnant.

Step 4

Watch the pregnancy test for the presence of a minus/negative sign ( - ) in the test's round window. This negative sign indicates you are not pregnant. Because you are likely taking the test after missing your period, it is a good idea to repeat the test if you have not started your period after a week. Waiting slightly longer will allow the amount of pregnancy hormones to build up in your body and in your urine, meaning the test can more easily detect pregnancy.

Step 5

Call the manufacturer at 1-800-378-1783 (1-800-EPT-1STEP) if you do not observe blue line on the test's square window. This means your test results in the round window are inconclusive.

Tip

One of the best ways to ensure your pregnancy test is accurate is to use your first urination of the day. This is the urine likely to contain the most pregnancy hormone.

warning

Certain medications can affect an EPT result. These include any that contain Human Chorionic Gonddotropin (hCG) or are used in combination with hCG. These include brand names Humegon, Pregnyl, Profasi, Pergonal or APL. Other conditions such as ovarian cysts or other medical conditions also can interfere with a home pregnancy test's effectiveness.
