A bunion is a structural change to the foot that causes the big toe to tilt toward the other toes, which creates a small bump on the side of the foot. The most common symptoms are pain and swelling in the affected joint and possible numbness. According to the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, the only way to get rid of bunions is through surgery to correct the disorder. However, several home remedies will help relieve the symptoms and maintain flexibility in the joint.

Step 1

Change your foot wear. Tight shoes do not cause bunions, according to the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, but they can aggravate the condition. Wear shoes with a wide toe box and avoid high heels.

Step 2

Place adhesive pads over the bunion to prevent irritation. Bunion pads are available by prescription or over-the-counter at the drug store.

Step 3

Consult your doctor about steroid shots. The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons suggests that steroid shots may relieve the swelling associated with bunions.

Step 4

Stretch and massage your toes. Dr. Foot recommends holding your big toe and gently manipulating the joint in all directions while massaging the ball of your foot.

Step 5

Apply ice several times a day. Ice reduces swelling and helps relieve pain.

Step 6

Roll your foot on a tennis ball. Roll clockwise and counter-clockwise, as well as back and forth.

Step 7

Get a prescription for custom orthotics. These types of devices are available from a foot an ankle surgeon.

Step 8

Retrain your toes, per Dr. Foot. Loop a thick rubber band between both your big toes. Spread your feet apart until the band pulls your big toes away from your other toes. Hold for a count of 10 and relax.
