According to "Yoga Journal," expectant mothers should participate in a gentle yoga practice, or none at all, during the first trimester. This trimester is when the fetus is still implanting itself into the uterus, and, therefore, strenuous yoga poses should be avoided to prevent miscarriage.

According to "Yoga Journal," expectant mothers should participate in a gentle yoga practice, or none at all, during the first trimester. This trimester is when the fetus is still implanting itself into the uterus, and, therefore, strenuous yoga poses should be avoided to prevent miscarriage. If you participate in a regular yoga practice before pregnancy, continuing with modifications is important. Another option is to attend prenatal yoga classes. Knowing what poses to avoid in your practice will keep you and your baby healthy and safe.

Avoid inverted poses during the first trimester. Inverted poses include headstands, shoulder stands, and poses that require you to lie on your back with legs extended in the air.

Refrain from practicing twisting poses. Avoid poses such as revolved triangle, half prayer twist, and chair twist to name a few.

Step forward and step back during sun salutation instead of jumping during the first trimester.

Transition slowly between yoga poses to prevent injury to the fetus.

Substitute camel and bridge pose for upward facing bow pose during your first trimester.

Tip

Locate a prenatal yoga class or a prenatal yoga instructor in your area.

Ask your yoga instructor for modifications during your first trimester.

warning

Consult with a physician before beginning any exercise program.

Avoid yoga practice if experiencing complications during pregnancy.
