The Equate Pregnancy Test, which is available at Wal-Mart for approximately $4, is a urine test that detects the pregnancy hormone known as human Chorionic Gonadotropin, or hCG, as early as the first day of a missed period. The test has a thumb grip at one end and an absorbent tip at the other end that is covered by a plastic cap. The front of the test has an egg-shaped, clear plastic area in the middle that protects the Results and Control windows from splashed urine. The Results window is round in shape, and the Control window is square-shaped. The design of the Equate Pregnancy Test makes it easy to read within 3 to 4 minutes after use.

Step 1

Remove the protective cap that covers the absorbent tip and then, while gripping the thumb grip, hold the absorbent tip at a downward angle in your urine flow for a minimum of 10 seconds.

Step 2

Replace the protective cap and lay the test on a flat surface with the Results and Control windows facing up.

Step 3

Examine the results window after 3 minutes. The presence of a "plus" sign in the Results window and a vertical line in the Control window indicates that you are probably pregnant, but be aware that the lines that make up the "plus" sign don't have to exactly match in color since one line can be lighter or darker than the other. The presence of a "minus sign" or a single horizontal line in the Results window and a vertical line in the Control window indicates that you are probably not pregnant.

Step 4

Wait 1 more minute to read the pregnancy test if no results are seen after 3 minutes, but don't read the test after 10 minutes.

Tip

It is normal for a light pink color or horizontal lines to move across the Results and Control windows as the test begins to work. Repeat the test in 1 week if you get a negative result but still haven't had a period.

warning

The test is considered invalid if no line appears in the Control window after 3 to 4 minutes and if no lines or a single vertical line appears in the results window.
