Foods for a Soft Diet After a Tooth Implant

 by Sharon Therien

You should eat a soft food diet for 5 to 7 days after having tooth implant surgery. During your soft food diet, it is important to continue to take in the foods your body needs for energy and to carry out its basic processes. However, this doesn’t mean you have to blend an entire meal in the blender or eat baby food.

You should eat a soft food diet for 5 to 7 days after having tooth implant surgery. During your soft food diet, it is important to continue to take in the foods your body needs for energy and to carry out its basic processes. However, this doesn't mean you have to blend an entire meal in the blender or eat baby food. You can consume a variety of soft foods to achieve this goal; talk to your dentist for specific recommendations after the surgery.

Dairy

It is easy to include dairy in a soft-food diet since most dairy products are already soft. Choose soft cheeses like Brie or melt harder cheeses into soft meals. Yogurt is another simple and healthy option. Use an abundance of fruit, vegetables like kale and spinach, milk and yogurt in smoothies to obtain multiple nutrients. For a treat, make a milkshake by blending ice cream, milk and fruit.

Protein

It can be difficult to consume meat on a soft-food diet, so you'll have to find other ways to get protein. Eggs are soft no matter how you cook them and they are packed with the basic nutrients. Scrambled eggs or omelets are easy ways to add additional ingredients to your meal. You can mix chopped vegetables, milk and cheese into the eggs. The vegetables will soften as the eggs cook. Other protein options are fish or beans, which you can mix with rice and vegetables for a complete meal. Also try bite-sized cubes of meat cooked into soups or stews until they are extremely tender. Nut butter is another good protein source.

Fruits and Vegetables

Many fruits are soft and if they aren't, you can puree them in a blender or food processor to make them soft. Ripe peaches, pears and berries as some of the softest varieties. For an easier option, canned fruits and applesauce are already softened for you. Soften vegetables by steaming or boiling them. You can also make mashed potatoes or mash a bunch of different vegetables together.

Grains

For the grain group, your best option might be cooked cereals like oatmeal, oat bran or cream of wheat. These cereals are extremely soft when cooked completely. Add berries, cinnamon or vanilla to the cereal if you would like. Rice, noodles or grits are other soft options in this food group. Also try eating soft bread that isn't toasted. Add peanut or almond butter to the bread for a more complete meal.
