Whether it is for a minor procedure to fix carpal tunnel syndrome or a major heart surgery, spending time in the hospital is never fun. Your main thoughts after coming out of surgery are about how fast healing will take place so you can get back to your normal life. Recovery times vary depending on the severity of your surgery, but you can heal faster after any surgery if you follow a few helpful tips.

Step 1

Leave your bed two to three times per day and walk as much as you are able, or as your doctor advises. Change positions in bed often if you are unable to get out.

Step 2

Eat foods that help with wound healing before and after your surgery. These include egg whites, walnuts, almonds, brown rice, fish and chicken.

Step 3

Lessen your pain with alternating cold and heat, deep breathing techniques and elevating your incision. Less pain means you can move about sooner.

Step 4

Listen to music. Music reduces stress, aids in relaxation and may make your body produce endorphins, or the "feel good" body chemicals, advises Ohio State University.

warning

Always follow your doctor's instructions for post-operative recuperation.
