Ringworm is a fungal infection involving the skin. Different types of fungi affect various parts of the body, including the scalp, groin, foot and body. Jock itch, also referred to as tinea cruris, is a ringworm infection in the groin. Ringworm thrives in warm, moist environments and spreads easily between people. Treatment for the condition includes using topical antifungal infections. Although the name jock itch congers up images of a male condition, women, especially overweight women, are also susceptible to contracting the fungal infection.

Circular Rash

The classic symptom of a ringworm infection includes a circular rash. This rash occurs as a red ring with elevated edges. The center of the ring has normal skin. The circular shape of the rash may also have flaking or peeling skin, and the skin may crack open in the groin area.

Itching And Pain

Itching occurs in the area of affected areas, such as the skin folds of the groin. The skin may also experience a burning sensation. The infection may spread to skin the inner thighs, the labia and the buttocks. In addition to the intense itching and burning, the condition may cause pain, according to the Merck Manual of Medical Information. Treating the infection with antifungal medications helps treat the irritated skin and eases the pain. During hot months, the infection may recur, causing a recurrence of the itching, burning and pain.

Redness And Irritation

The ringworm infection in the groin may cause the skin to experience a red and inflamed rash. Some females may experience this redness with flaking, irritated edges to the rash instead of the classic ring-shaped rash associated with ringworm infections.

Hair Loss And Skin-Coloring Changes

Ringworm infections in the groin may cause hair loss for any pubic hair in the affected area. The hair may fall out at the follicle or it may break off easily and cause stubble. Some women may experience a lightening or darkening of the skin in the area of the jock itch, according to Medline Plus.

Increased Symptoms

Wearing tight undergarments or tight, synthetic fabrics may cause additional irritation of the jock itch in women. Additional behaviors, such as exercising and walking, may increase the symptoms of the fungal rash, according to the Mayo Clinic.
