Cleansing the blood naturally may be helpful for building an individual's immune system, removing cholesterol and balancing the pH in the body. There are certain herbs, supplements and foods that may be especially effective in cleansing the blood. Although these products may be natural, some herbs and other natural substances may produce side effects. It is always wise to check with a health practitioner before using an herb or supplement you have not used previously.

Step 1

Buy echinacea made by a reputable company. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, a study indicated that not all brands of echinacea are as pure as others, and some do not contain what the label indicates. Ask the herbal specialist at a health food store to direct you to the best brands.

Step 2

Make an herbal juice drink or tea using echinacea. Echinacea is available in various forms such as tablets, capsules, ointments, extracts and dried herb.

Step 3

Place 1 ml to 3 ml--20 to 90 drops--of echinacea extract in a glass of homemade or processed juice and drink twice daily during an illness to fight infections.

Step 4

Prepare an herbal tea with dried echinacea root or herb by steeping 1 g to 2 g echinacea in 2 cups boiling water for 15 minutes. Strain and drink throughout the day. The tea can be stored in the refrigerator and heated before drinking.

Step 5

Make an infusion by brewing a 1- to 3-inch piece of dried burdock root in 1 cup of boiling water for 15 minutes, removing the burdock root and allowing the liquid to cool, writes Jethro Kloss in his book, "Back to Eden." Drink the tea three times daily.

Step 6

Mix the burdock root tea with the echinacea tea for an extra boost. Add a small dollop of honey to sweeten. Burdock root is known for its ability to purify the blood, clearing it of toxins, notes University of Maryland Medical Center.

Step 7

Eat fresh burdock root as a vegetable or in salads. Boil it in a saucepan until it is tender, as you would carrots. Serve hot or cold with a vinegar-based dressing.

Tip

Echinacea has been used in both Eastern and Western medicine, and is known for its ability to remove impurities and disease-causing agents from the blood, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Burdock root is used in Chinese medicine as a blood cleanser and for clearing the bloodstream of toxins. It acts as a diuretic, cleaning the system and promoting excess urination.

warning

Echinacea is generally considered safe to consume during an illness and for up to seven days thereafter. If side effects occur, stop using it and consult a health practitioner.

Leaves of the burdock plant may cause skin irritations and rash. If symptoms appear, stop using the burdock. Consult a health practitioner if the rash does not disappear within 24 hours.
