Installing a Graco Snugride infant car seat base correctly is essential to the overall safety and function of the car seat. Car seat bases have become popular, because they make it easy to quickly install and to remove the car seat without ever disturbing your infant. You can install a car seat base one of two ways: by using the vehicle seat belt in older cars or by employing the LATCH (lower anchors and tethers for children) system in newer models. Once you have installed the car seat base, ask a car seat technician at your local fire station, police station or hospital to inspect it to ensure that you have completed the installation correctly.

Using Vehicle Belt

Step 1

Place the Graco Snugride car seat base in a rear-facing position in the center seat of the back seat of your vehicle. This is the safest place in your vehicle for an infant.

Step 2

Adjust the foot of the car seat base to level the base on the vehicle seat. Pull the foot down one notch. Reinspect the car seat base to determine whether the seat is now level. If the Graco Snugride car seat base is not level, readjust the foot of the car seat base.

Step 3

Inspect the Graco Snugride's level indicator to make sure that the car seat base is level. The level indicator will read all blue if the Graco Snugride is level. If the car seat base is not level, adjust the foot of the car seat base to make it sit level on the vehicle seat.

Step 4

Thread the vehicle seat belt through the opening in the car seat base, making sure that the belt goes under the tongue of the car seat base. Pop the vehicle seat belt through the other side of the car seat base, and buckle the belt. Make sure the belt is not twisted.

Step 5

Place one knee on the car seat base, and apply all your weight. Tighten the vehicle seat belt so the car seat base does not move more than 1 inch in any direction.

Using LATCH

Step 1

Extend the LATCH to its maximum length to make installing the car seat base easier.

Step 2

Place the car seat base in your vehicle in the center back seat. Locate the LATCH connectors in your vehicle. You will need to check the level indicator on the car seat base just as you would if installing the Graco Snugride with a vehicle seat belt.

Step 3

Thread the LATCH through the Graco Snugride car seat base belt path. Make sure the LATCH is underneath the tongue of the car seat base and is not twisted.

Step 4

Hook the LATCH connectors to the lower vehicle connectors. Tug on the LATCH to make sure they are secure.

Step 5

Place your knee in the car seat base, and apply pressure while pulling on the adjustment belt. Tighten the LATCH until the Graco Snugride car seat base cannot be moved more than 1 inch in any direction.

Tip

Install a car seat base in any car your baby will normally be riding in so that you do not have to remove the base once it is properly installed.

After you have extended the foot of the Graco Snugride car seat base fully, if it is still not level, place a rolled-up towel underneath the foot and then attempt to level the base.

warning

Never put two LATCH connectors onto one vehicle LATCH unless your vehicle's manufacturer indicates that it is allowed.

Always place your infant in a rear-facing position. Not only is this the law, but it is also safer for your baby.
