Some dieters find prepackaged meals to be convenient and helpful in the weight loss process. If this is true for you, you may be considering the Optifast or Optislim weight loss programs. Learning about both programs can assist you in determining if either of these plans is right for you. Consult your physician before you starting any type of weight loss plan.

Optislim

Optislim offers three weight loss programs -- Accelerated, Rapid and Balanced. The Accelerated weight loss plan is comprised of three daily meal replacements. You choose amongst meal replacement shakes, bars or soups. The Rapid weight loss plan includes two meal replacements and one balanced meal per day. The Balanced weight loss plan is comprised of one meal replacement and three balanced meals per day. You start on the Rapid weight loss plan to kick start your weight loss and then transition to the Rapid plan to lose most of your excess weight. The Balanced plan is used to lose your last few pounds and maintain your weight loss.

Optifast

Optifast offers two weight loss plans -- a full liquid diet and a partial liquid diet. The full liquid diet is comprised of six daily meal replacement shakes. The partial liquid diet is comprised of four daily meal replacement shakes and one balanced meal per day. The full liquid diet provides only 800 calories per day while the partial liquid diet provides approximately 1,200 calories per day.

Similarities and Differences

Both Optifast and Optislim rely heavily on meal replacements. The full-liquid Optifast diet and Rapid Optislim diet both utilize meal replacements exclusively for nutrition. The goal of the Optislim diet is to maintain your weight loss by adhering to the Balanced plan for life, whereas the goal of Optifast is to have you transition to a healthy, balanced diet once you have reached your goal weight.

Considerations

Although meal replacements are convenient, they do not provide you with the opportunity to learn how to plan and prepare meals. Learning how to prepare balanced meals is an essential skill to long-term weight loss success. Furthermore, any diet that provides 800 calories or less per day is considered a very low calorie diet and should only be pursued under the supervision of your physician.
