Age spots are typically a reaction to sun damage on your skin. As you age, melanin, the pigment that protects your skin form sun damage, can clump together to form spots. While sunscreen and other forms of protection are the best ways to prevent age spots, you can cover old age spots using the right type of makeup and techniques. Mimic the look of clear, smooth and youthful skin by applying a thin layer of makeup for a more even appearance.

Apply a moisturizer that contains a sunscreen of at least SPF 15 or more on a daily basis, suggests John Wolf, Jr., professor and chairman of the dermatology department at Baylor College of Medicine. Moisturizer conditions your skin so your makeup goes on more smoothly, while the sunscreen will help protect your skin for further sun damage. Always apply your moisturizer under your makeup to aide in the application.

Apply a makeup primer to your skin. Makeup primer is especially important for older women because it smoothes out fine lines and wrinkles and fills in pores so your makeup goes on flawlessly. It sets your makeup so you don't suffer from a cakey appearance or makeup that settles in your fine lines and wrinkles, making you look older. It also helps to add another layer to hide away age spots.

Dab your ring finger into a small pot of peach-colored concealer. Peach can help cancel out the darkness of your age spots, Gregory Arlt, a makeup artist for M.A.C. tells "Good Housekeeping" magazine. Your ring finger has the lightest touch, which aides in preventing over-application. Tap your finger over the age spot until it is covered, and then sweep over the concealer with a small brush to give the concealer a more natural texture.

Add a small pump of foundation to your skin, smoothing over your face with your fingers for the most natural look. Try to find foundation made especially for women over 40 that doesn't contain shimmer, which can make you look older. The foundation provides a top layer to help blend the concealer into your skin so it's less noticeable and your age spots are diminished.

Brush a layer of translucent powder over your entire face to create an even tone and set your concealer. Translucent powder is light, celebrity makeup artist Linda Mason tells CBS News. It makes your makeup longer lasting so your age spots are covered and you can feel confident.
