Doctors prescribe Adderall to help children and adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, control symptoms like difficulty concentrating, trouble sitting still and difficult controlling their actions. It's also useful for people with a sleep disorder called narcolepsy. Adderall is available in regular tablets as Adderall and in extended-release tablets as Adderall XR.
5 mg
Each 5 mg tablet of Adderall or Adderall XR contains 1.25 mg of four amphetamine salts: dextroamphetamine saccharate, dextroamphetamine sulfate, amphetamine aspartate and amphetamine sulfate, notes Drugs.com. These four drugs provide a total amphetamine base equivalence of 3.13 mg. Five mg tablets of Adderall are white to off-white, with no color additives, while 5 mg tablets of Adderall XR do contain a dye known as FD & C Blue #1.
7.5 mg
Adderall 7.5 mg tablets contain a dye known as FD & C Blue #1, along with 1.875 mg of dextroamphetamine saccharate, dextroamphetamine sulfate, amphetamine aspartate and amphetamine sulfate. The total amphetamine base equivalence is 4.7 mg, states Drugs.com. Adderall XR doesn't come in a 7.5 mg dose.
10 mg
The 10 mg tablets of Adderall and Adderall XR have 2.5 mg of dextroamphetamine saccharate, dextroamphetamine sulfate, amphetamine aspartate and amphetamine sulfate, for a total amphetamine base equivalence of 6.3 mg. Both forms of the 10 mg tablets contain FD & C Blue #1.
12.5 mg
Adderall 12.5 mg tablets are made with 3.125 mg of each of the four dextroamphetamine and amphetamine salts, for a total amphetamine base equivalence of 7.8 mg. They do contain FD & C Blue #1 as well. Adderall XR doesn't come in a 12.5 mg form.
15 mg
Adderall 15 mg tablets and Adderall XR 15 mg tablets are manufactured with 3.75 mg of each of the four salts, for a total amphetamine base equivalence of 9.4 mg. Regular Adderall 15 mg tablets have a FD & C Yellow #6 color additive, while Adderall XR 15 mg contains FD & C Blue #1.
20 mg
Adderall 20 mg has 5 mg of each of the four salts, with a total of 12.6 mg of amphetamine base equivalence. Adderall XR 20 mg tablets have the same amount of the individual salts, but a base equivalence of 12.5 mg. Regular Adderall has FD & C Yellow #6 added, while Adderall XR 20 mg contains red and yellow iron oxides.
25 mg
Adderall XR 25 mg is made with 6.25 mg of each of the four salts, with a total amphetamine base of 15.6 mg. It contains red and yellow iron oxides. There are no regular Adderall 25 mg tablets.
30 mg
Both the regular and XR forms of Adderall 30 mg tablets contain 7.5 mg of each of the four salts, for a total of 18.8 mg of amphetamine base. Regular Adderall 30 mg has FD & C Yellow #6 and the extended release version contains red and yellow iron oxides.
