The juice of young, green coconuts, also referred to as coconut water, is clear, rather than white as some people might think. Proponents attribute a variety of benefits to coconut water, believing that it can strengthen the immune system and serve as an energy drink. Consuming coconut water, however, is not a substitute for comprehensive health care. Consult your health practitioner for any medical problems before using coconut water.

Antiseptic and Anti-Viral

Although there is little scientific research on the subject, anecdotal evidence indicates that coconut water can be used as an antiseptic and might be useful for emergency blood transfusions because it is sterile and has properties similar to those of human plasma. Emergency medics used it for these purposes during World War II on wounded soldiers in the Pacific islands, according to Bruce Fife in "Coconut Water for Health and Healing." Additional anecdotal evidence points to the efficacy of coconut water as an antiviral compound.

Hydration

Coconut water possesses high quantities of nutrients and minerals, including calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium, manganese and phosphorus. Because of these properties, it can be used as a substitute for sugary energy cocktails and is highly effective in rehydrating the body, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services. Use the juice after exercise or to replenish fluids lost from exertion in the heat. It is low in cholesterol and sugar and has a pleasant, light coconut flavor. A patent to produce a natural sports drink made from coconut water was granted to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Vomiting and Nausea

Young coconut juice is helpful for replacing lost fluids from vomiting in cases of typhoid, malaria and influenza, Fife writes. It also might help settle queasiness and stomach upsets and acts as a natural diuretic.

Natural Cleansing

Fife mentions that a mixture of coconut water and olive oil might work to eliminate parasites and worms from the intestines, although there is little scientific research regarding this process or the efficacy of body cleansing in general. Before attempting a cleanse, check with your health practitioner to confirm that you are not suffer from another condition that could mimic the presence of parasites.

Kidney Stones

The juice of green coconuts might be helpful for dissolving kidney stones because of the high amount of potassium present in the juice, suggests Dr. Theodore Baroody in "Alkalize or Die." Potassium assists in alkalizing urine, which might help prevent digestive wastes in the blood from solidifying and attaching to the kidney walls, offering possible protection against future stone formation.
