How to Make a Microdermabrasion Scrub

Microdermabrasion is a clinical procedure that uses crystals to remove the top layer of skin. The exfoliating procedure removes dead skin layers, leaving skin soft and glowing. Homemade varieties can be used once a week and cost less than expensive spa treatments. Ingredients used are commonly found in the kitchen.

Combine one cup of sugar, half a cup extra virgin olive oil and one teaspoon of lemon juice into a small bowl. Stir with a wooden spoon until all of the ingredients are mixed thoroughly.

Add six drops of essential oils, such as lavender or citrus. Add one tablespoon of baking soda, which will soften the skin.

Mix well until all lumps are gone. The mixture should be one color. Place the ingredients into a clean, dry jar with a lid. Store it in a low-humidity environment. The scrub should last for six months.

Drop 2 to 3 teaspoons of the mixture into the palm of your hand with a small spoon. Add three to four droplets of water and mix together to create a paste. Using your fingertips or a damp washcloth, apply the paste to your wet face in a circular motion. Lightly rub into face, but do not overscrub.

Tip

Additional ingredients include a few drop of vanilla extract or a pinch of cinnamon.

Scrubs make great gifts during the holiday season.

Substitute salt for sugar to make a salt scrub.

warning

If you have sensitive skin, limit use of the homemade microdermabrasion scrub to once or twice week.
