Percocet is a class II prescription drug, prescribed as a pain reliever for moderate to high acute pain. It comes in six different strengths. The main active ingredients of Percocet are oxycodone and acetaminophen. This blend classifies Percocet as a narcotic analgesic, and is considered a highly addictive painkiller. Addiction and overdose remain the primary concerns of taking a drug of this nature.

Percocet 2.5/325

Percocet 2.5/325 is the weakest form of Percocet. According to Endo Pharmaceuticals, this dosage contains 2.5 mg of oxycodone hydrochloride and 325 mg of acetaminophen. A quantity of 2.5 mg oxycodone hydrochloride is translated to 2.23409 mg of pure oxycodone. This dosage is especially important for building up to higher strengths in the beginning of treatment to prevent side effects of circulatory shock and respiratory depression. It is also crucial for tapering down from a higher strength to prevent withdrawal symptoms due to the narcotic nature of this medication.

Percocet 5/325

The second weakest dose of this medication is Percocet 5/325. Endo Pharmaceuticals lists this dosage of containing 5 mg of oxycodone hydrochloride and 325 mg of acetaminophen. In Percocet 5/325, 5 mg oxycodone hydrochloride is equivalent to 4.4815 mg of pure oxycodone. This dosage can be used for building up and tapering, or may be enough to treat moderate levels of pain.

Percocet 7.5/325

According to Endo Pharmaceuticals, Percocet 7.5/325 contains 7.5 mg of oxycodone hydrochloride and 325 mg of acetaminophen. This is one of two doses that contains 7.5 mg of oxycodone hydrochloride and contains 6.7228 mg of pure oxycodone. It can be used to treat moderate pain.

Percocet 7.5/500

According to Endo Pharmaceuticals, Percocet 7.5/500 contains 7.5 mg oxycodone hydrochloride and 500 mg of acetaminophen. This is the second dose that contains 7.5 mg of oxycodon hydrochloride and similarly contains 6.7228 mg of pure oxycodone. The difference in this dosage is an additional 175 mg of acetaminophen, bringing the total from 325 mg to 500 mg. Percocet 7.5/500 can be used to treat moderate to moderately high pain.

Percocet 10/325

Endo Pharmaceuticals lists Percocet 10/325 as one of two dosages that contains the maximum quantity of oxycodone hydrochloride. Percocet 10/325 contains 10 mg oxycodone hydrochloride and 325 mg of acetaminophen. In Percocet 10/325, 10 mg oxycodone hydrochloride is equivalent to 8.9637 mg of pure oxycodone. Due to the high dosage of oxycodone, this strength is reserved for patients suffering from high pain.

Percocet 10/650

Endo Pharmaceuticals lists Percocet 10/650 the second of two dosages that contains the maximum quantity of oxycodone hydrochloride. Percocet 10/650 contains 10 mg oxycodone hydrochloride and 650 mg of acetaminophen. In Percocet 10/650, 10 mg oxycodone hydrochloride is equivalent to 8.9637 mg of pure oxycodone. This dosage also has the highest quantity of acetaminophen, making it the strongest form of Percocet available. Due to the high dosage of oxycodone, this strength is reserved for patients suffering from very high pain. It should be used with caution and always gradually tapered when on a course of Percocet.
