The Calories in Vodka & Gin

Sipping a beverage containing vodka or gin during an evening out with friends or after a long workweek can help you unwind. Although the serving size of either type of alcohol is significantly smaller than wine or beer, don't take the alcohol content or calories of vodka and gin lightly. Provided they have the same proof, the two drinks contain the same number of calories.

Caloric Content

The calories in 80-proof vodka and gin are identical, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. A 1.5-ounce serving of either alcohol, known as a "jigger," contains 97 calories. As either alcohol's proof increases, so, too, does its caloric content. The proof is a number that's double the percentage of alcohol by volume of the drink. Ninety-proof vodka or gin has 110 calories per 1.5 ounces, while 1.5 ounces of 100-proof vodka or gin contains 124 calories. If you choose to enjoy your vodka or gin as part of a mixed drink, the drink's other elements increase the caloric content.
