Juicing fresh lemons and limes and eating ripe oranges and grapefruits may not feel like dieting. But they're loaded with fiber which promotes a healthy digestive system. Lemon juice and the infamous Grapefruit Diet are also refreshing, low-calorie and high in vitamin C. According to a 2006 Scripps Clinic study by Dr. Ken Fujioka, "Half of a fresh grapefruit eaten before meals was associated with significant weight loss." Grapefruit helps reduce insulin spikes, which means that your body processes foods more efficiently instead of storing them.

Wash all fruits thoroughly before either peeling or slicing them. Roll the fruits along the counter or table, or between your hands, to help loosen the insides, making it easier to release the juices.

Slice a lemon in half and squeeze a spoonful or two of its juice into a mug of hot water. Drink this first thing in the morning to "wake up" your system and help aid your digestion.

Eat a fresh orange or half of a grapefruit before your regular breakfast. This will fill you up, making that sugary cereal or box of donuts much less tempting.

Slice one or two lemons and limes into wedges. Squeeze the juice into a pitcher or reusable water bottle and fill it with cold water. Drop the wedges in and sip the citrus-flavored water all day long. Keeping hydrated is important to losing weight, but drinking plain water can get boring. Adding fresh, tangy lemon and lime juice gives you a little extra flavor along with vitamin C and potassium.

Cut two to three grapefruits in half and use a glass or plastic juicer to fill a small tumbler with fresh juice. Drink this at mid-afternoon when your blood sugar is low and you would usually be craving a sweet snack.

Squeeze fresh lime or lemon juice over chicken, fish or lean beef to help tenderize them and add flavor. This will help you cut back on salt, which can cause water retention.

Drink a second cup of hot water and lemon juice to soothe jangled nerves at the end of the day, and give your immune system a little boost while you sleep.

Tip

Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet along with your citrus fruits to keep your body nourished as you lose weight.

warning

Never fast on fruit juice alone for more than seven days without consulting your physician.
