Surgical scars are a constant reminder of illness that has been conquered through a surgical procedure. Some scars are more prominent than others, however, and often do not diminish much after surgery. Treatments are available not only to fade surgical scarring but also to help heal the underlying tissue. Immediately after surgery, doctors will recommend keeping your incision clean to help the healing process and decrease the scar's visibility, but this alone may not work as well as you would like it to.

Step 1

Massage the scar daily using cocoa butter or lotion containing cocoa butter. Cocoa butter has been used in the treatment of stretch marks and has shown the amazing ability to promote skin cell regeneration, causing scars to fade.

Step 2

Apply vitamin E creams or liquids onto the scar daily. Vitamin E is a natural antioxidant and antibacterial agent that promotes healing and soothing of inflammation commonly present in scar tissue. A vitamin E supplement can also be taken to boost the effects of the creams or liquids, treating the scar underneath the skin's surface.

Step 3

Apply a skin moisturizer containing alpha hydroxy acids to the scar site. This will promote skin health and scar fading. It will also help the healing process by increasing the skin's collagen production, which is essential to healing.

Tip

Be patient. Scars will heal and diminish with time. The healing process takes roughly six months to a year.
