Function

Nioxin shampoo is intended to treat hair loss and scalp inflammation in both males and females. It contains ingredients that remove excess dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which can cause hair loss. Nioxin shampoo also has vitamins and other nutrients that can help strengthen the hair and hair follicles.

Ingredients

Nioxin shampoo contains CoZyme. This is the brand name for a formula that includes the antioxidant known as Co-enzyme Q-10. CoZyme includes additional ingredients that allow Co-enzyme Q-10 to be absorbed into the hair more easily. Nioxin shampoo also contains Glyco-Fused Complex which includes a variety of moisturizers to protect the scalp from other ingredients.

Scalp Redness

A reddened scalp is the most common side effect of Nioxin shampoo. This is typically due to the presence of niacin (vitamin B3) in the shampoo, which dilates the blood vessels. Niacin is included in Nioxin shampoo because of its ability to stimulate the hair follicles by improving blood circulation to the scalp. Scalp reddening due to niacin is normal and should disappear within an hour of applying the shampoo.

Allergic Reactions

Nioxin advertises its shampoo as being hypoallergenic, meaning that it has a low risk of causing an allergic reaction. It accomplishes this by using only plant-based ingredients which are less likely to cause allergic reactions. Nioxin shampoo doesn't contain animal byproducts, which carry significant potential for allergic reactions. It also doesn't contain sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate, which are known to irritate the scalp.

Hair Loss

Nioxin advises that its scalp cleansing products can actually cause hair loss at the beginning of a treatment program. This is due to environmental changes of the scalp and shouldn't last more than two weeks. The use of Nioxin shampoo should be discontinued if the hair loss lasts longer than two weeks.
