Keratosis pilaris is a skin condition that usually affects young people under the age of 30. Characterized by small red or white bumps resembling acne and rough patches of skin on the arms, thighs and buttocks, keratosis pilaris is a purely cosmetic condition that has no negative health effects and normally does not hurt or itch. Although there are prescription medications, keratosis pilaris can be stubborn and difficult to treat. Caring for your skin and taking supplements that promote skin health is a good way to help heal your skin and prevent a worsening of the condition.

Step 1

Take an omega-3 supplement, which may help to improve skin condition and heal dryness. Omega-3 is also found in cold-water fish like salmon and halibut. Take 1 to 3 g of fish oil daily in capsule or oil form.

Step 2

Supplement your diet with coconut oil, which is a powerful antibacterial and contains many skin-supporting nutrients. Take 1 tsp. to 1 tbsp. of virgin coconut oil per day. You can also apply coconut oil topically to treat dry, rough patches.

Step 3

Take a vitamin A supplement or apply vitamin A topically. Vitamin A is an important nutrient for skin health and can help improve the look and feel of skin affected by keratosis pilaris. Take 700 to 900 mcg per day.

Tip

Use supplements for three months before discontinuing for best results.

warning

Consult your doctor before taking any supplements if you are pregnant or nursing or have underlying health conditions.
