How to Exfoliate to Get Rid of Dark Underarm Skin

 by Melissa King

If you shave your underarms, you've probably noticed a dark shadow on your skin even after the hair is long gone. Often, your armpits will look dark because of the buildup of dead skin cells and other debris. If you're in the mood to go sleeveless, get rid of the discoloration by exfoliating your underarm skin.

Wash your underarms in the shower with warm water and a gentle cleanser. Pat dry with a towel.

Dampen your underarms with a few drops of water. Massage the exfoliant into your underarm skin using small, circular motions. If desired, you can also use a loofah or sea sponge to apply the exfoliant. Continue exfoliating for two to three minutes.

Rinse the exfoliant off with warm water. Check for underarm darkness. If any remains, exfoliate again. Pat underarms dry with a towel when you're finished.

Rub a moisturizer into your underarms to hydrate and soften skin.

Tip

If you shave your armpits, consider waxing them instead. Shaving only cuts off the hair above the skin, while waxing removes the entire hair, making underarms appear lighter.

To make your own exfoliant, if desired, combine 1 tablespoon of baking soda (a natural bleaching agent) with 1 teaspoon of cool water in a small bowl. Add the oil of one vitamin E gel capsule into the bowl; mix into a paste.

warning

Depending on the severity of underarm darkness, it can take up to six weeks to see results with treatment.

Avoid using hair removal cream on your underarms as it may irritate the sensitive underarm area.
