When you go snorkeling, you need to be able to see clearly to enjoy the experience and stay safe. Though you cannot wear glasses with a snorkel mask, people who wear glasses can use several different methods to seeing clearly in the water. You can wear contact lenses with your snorkeling mask, or you can wear a mask with prescription lenses.

Step 1

Try on masks with pre-made prescription lenses at a dive shop. Most masks with pre-made prescription lenses will have the same prescription in each eye. If your eyes require dramatically different prescriptions, or if you have an unusually high prescription, pre-made prescription masks might not work for you.

Step 2

Select a mask without prescription lenses if none of the pre-made prescription masks works for your eyes.

Step 3

Take the mask to an optician who specializes in prescription masks. You can have an optician replace the mask's original lenses with prescription lenses or insert prescription lenses over the original lenses. Most opticians who make prescription masks can make lenses for nearsighted, farsighted or astigmatic vision, as well as bifocal lenses and reading lenses.

Tip

If you spend more time snorkeling than scuba diving, consider getting a prescription mask that will enable you to see objects at greater distances rather than close-up. If you will be scuba diving, however, you will need to see close up to read your depth gauges and look at sea creatures in closer focus.

If you choose to wear contact lenses with your mask, beware that you might lose them if your mask falls off in the water. If you choose to wear a prescription mask, have keep your glasses or contacts in an easily accessible place on the boat or shore so that you can put them on when you remove your mask.
