If you have a white or red, painful sore on your tonsil, you may be suffering from a canker sore. Canker sores, known medically as aphthous ulcers, are legions that can form anywhere in the mouth. Generally, canker sores can be treated using home remedies, if your doctor approves.

Baking Soda Mouth Rinse

MayoClinic.com recommends making a baking soda mouth rinse to reduce the pain of canker sores and help them heal. Mix 1 tsp. baking soda in 1/2 cup of warm water and stir. Gargle a small amount of the rinse in your mouth at a time by moving the mixture to the very back of the throat, then spit it out. Do not swallow the mixture. Repeat once a day until the canker sore is gone.

Milk of Magnesia

Use a combination of hydrogen peroxide and milk of magnesia to speed up the healing of canker sores and help reduce the pain. Create a solution of one part hydrogen peroxide and one part water, then dip a cotton swab in the mixture and apply it directly to the canker sore. Dip a clean cotton swab in a small amount of milk of magnesia, then dab it directly onto the canker sore. Repeat this process three to four times a day, recommends the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Alum

Dabbing a small amount of alum on a small, new canker sore may help keep it from getting worse. Alum is available at drugstores and grocery stores without a prescription. Although alum may not heal a canker sore, it may prevent it from getting bigger and help reduce the pain of the sore.

Ice

Ice may not speed up the healing of your canker sore, but it may help reduce the pain while the area is healing. Place a small ice cube or chip of ice directly on the canker sore to numb it. Allow the ice to melt and leave it on the area as long as you can stand it, or until it melts completely. Repeat as needed throughout the day to make canker sore pain more bearable.
