Sociopathic personality disorder also is known as antisocial personality disorder, the Mayo Clinic states. It is a mental illness that is chronic and affects the way you think in relation to society and people. Sociopathy is a dysfunction of the way in which you relate to people, the way you perceive situations and the way you think. The condition manifests generally as an inability to care about what is wrong or right. The Mayo Clinic reports that sociopathy peaks when you are in your mid-20s and later decreases.

Manipulative

Sociopathic behavior can present symptoms that may appear to be heightened versions of normal interactions between people. It is common, for example, for non-sociopaths to occasionally attempt to manipulate people to get what they want, but the level is more extreme for sociopaths. Symptoms include using your wit or charm to manipulate people on a regular basis or to intimidate people into doing what you want.

Lack Morals

Sociopaths usually do not possess the standard morals that society expects. Symptoms of this may include being deceitful and lying persistently as part of the disregard of standards of what is wrong and what is right in society. Other such symptoms include neglecting or abusing children and violating people's rights repeatedly. You may not have or show any remorse about harming people, either. Part of this is the violent or aggressive behavior symptoms, too. All of these may make it difficult for the sociopath and those around him to deal with each other. It also may make school or work or other social situations difficult or intolerable.

Behavioral Irregularities

Sociopathic behavior also may include being irresponsible in your work and tending to get agitated by interactions with other people. This, too, can lead to another symptom, which is coming into confrontation repeatedly with law enforcement officials. Impulsive behavior, another symptom, can lead to these conflicts with the law as well.

Relationship Problems

Because of the mental dysfunction related to sociopathic behavior, it may be difficult to form relationships with other people. If you are a sociopath, you do not have the mental and emotional tools, generally, to form good friendships, solid family connections or share love with another human being. Empathy is a major component of personal relationships, and if you do not experience or perceive empathy, there is little chance of truly connecting with another person.
