If you suspect you have an ear infection, talk to your doctor. Infections need to be treated with antibiotics as soon as possible to prevent complications. If you can't reach your doctor immediately, however, using salt can help ease some of the symptoms of the infection and inflammation and help you cope with pain until you can get a prescription to treat the root of the problem.

Step 1

Pour a cup of coarse salt into a cup and heat it in the microwave for one minute. Mix the salt to help the heat distribute evenly and then heat it for an additional minute.

Step 2

Put the salt into a sock and tie it up. Use a thick cotton sock so you don't burn your skin with the heat of the salt.

Step 3

Apply it to your ear for 10 to 15 minutes at a time. Repeat throughout the day as needed to help control pain. According to an article in CBS News, this can help control pain temporarily, but it will also draw fluids out.
