Everyone gets tired from time to time. Prolonged tiredness can cause someone to become exhausted. Long periods of exhaustion can cause or exacerbate additional conditions because it decreases the effect of the immune system in fighting off diseases. Examining the overall health of the patient and their lifestyle can provide insight on what treatment is necessary to relieve exhaustion.

Stress Management

Limiting stress is important in relieving exhaustion, states the University of Maryland Medical Center. Stress will naturally occur but if managed properly it can help to relieve exhaustion. Engaging in stress management activities such as yoga, meditation, progressive muscle relaxation or deep breathing exercises can help a patient to regularly manage their stress and alleviate stress. Breathing exercises can be performed practically anywhere at any time. Patients can try this simple exercise as an introduction to breathing exercises. Sit neutrally with feet flat on the floor and one hand on each knee. Closing the eyes allows them to focus on their breath. Patients should breathe in deeply for 10 seconds and breathe out for 10 seconds. This exercise can be repeated as often as necessary.

Rest

For some, it’s easier said than done, however getting rest each day is vitally important in treating exhaustion. Resting allows the body to repair itself and replenish its energy source. Patients should balance their periods of work and rest instead of only resting after experiencing exhaustion. Patients should make a conscious effort to take intermittent breaks. Rest can include sleeping or simply refraining from engaging in an activity. The University of Maryland Medical Center reiterates that getting adequate rest each night is equally as important to treat exhaustion. If it appears that getting adequate rest does not improve symptoms, patients should consult their doctor for an examination. Exhaustion can be a sign of another condition such as fibromyalgia or diabetes mellitus.

Diet

The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends consuming a diet of fresh fruits and vegetables, grains and proteins to support good overall health. Fresh foods provide an additional source of vitamins and minerals which provide the body with natural sources for energy. Drinking water is also important to prevent dehydration, which can contribute to exhaustion.
