Hair loss is a common complaint experienced by men and women alike. Although some cases of hair loss are due to genetics or illness, other possible causes are stress, nutrition and poor hair care habits. Herbal remedies may be helpful in preventing hair loss or encouraging hair growth. Certain Indian herbs are used in the practice of Ayurvedic medicine--a system of traditional Indian medicine. Always consult your doctor before you use any herbal remedy or supplement.

Brahmi

The brahmi herb has gained popularity in recent years in the Western world because of its supposed ability to help prevent hair loss and split ends and encourage hair growth. Commercially prepared hair growth oils containing brahmi are available through many online stores and in certain herbal and health food stores. According to Ayurvedic practitioner H.S. Puri in his book, "Simple Ayurvedic Remedies," the brahmi herb can be used to treat hair loss and promote healthy hair growth. The herb can be massaged into the hair by mixing it with oils or it can be taken internally to provide its hair growth benefits.

Sage

Sage is an herb that has been used for its culinary and healing properties for hundreds of years. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, sage essential oil may have the ability to stimulate new hair growth when mixed with a carrier oil such as olive oil. Additionally, it has been used in traditional Indian medicine for promoting hair growth. It is boiled in coconut oil, which is an oil that is also used for hair growth. This mixture is applied to the scalp to combat hair loss and encourage hair growth, according to author Victoria Sherrow in "Encyclopedia of Hair: A Cultural History."

Bhringraj

Bhringraj is one of the most commonly used herbs in Ayurvedic medicine. According to Ayurvedic Medicines, this herb is mostly used in hair tonic preparations to combat hair loss and premature greyness. According to H.S. Puri, the Bhringraj herb is used in head massage to treat hair loss. It is commonly mixed with coconut oil or sesame oil for use as a conditioning hair growth treatment.

Indian Gooseberry

Indian gooseberry is another popular herb used in Ayurvedic medicine to combat hair loss. According to H.K. Bakhru in "Herbs That Heal: Natural Remedies for Good Health," Indian gooseberry is used in Ayurvedic hair tonics to promote hair growth. The fruits are boiled in coconut oil, and the result is applied to the scalp. Gooseberry can also be eaten to provide benefits for hair growth and maintaining healthy hair.
