If you want to thicken your hair at home, you can try some natural remedies to increase your hair's volume to give the appearance of thicker hair.

Thinning hair and hair loss strike both genders — approximately one-third of women will suffer from alopecia at some point in their lives, while two-thirds of men will have experienced significant hair loss by age 35. Thinning hair stems from a variety of causes, including the natural aging process, over-styling (known as traction alopecia) and simple genetics.

If your doctor has ruled out serious medical conditions, she may prescribe medications or procedures to help with thinning hair. If you want to thicken your hair at home, you can try some natural remedies to increase your hair's volume to give the appearance of thicker hair.

Look Into Vitamins

Hair follicle cells have specific metabolic requirements that must be met for optimal hair growth; however, this isn't a sure thing when it comes to thickening hair.

Without the right vitamins and minerals to meet these requirements, hair growth, thickness and quality can be affected. You can get the right vitamins by consuming biotin, vitamin E, vitamin B-6, inositol, folate, vitamin C, zinc, magnesium and sulfur.

It's typically best to try to get vitamins from food, rather than from supplements. Foods rich in biotin include nuts, eggs and fish, which are also high in hair-promoting protein, as well as mushrooms and legumes. Vitamin E-rich foods include almonds, spinach, sweet potatoes and avocados, the latter of which also containing healthy fats that can help with hair health.

Use Vitamin-Rich Foods in Your Hair

Oat flour contains important lipids that can thicken the brittle strands of hair on your head, giving you the look of fuller hair.

Put 2 tablespoons of oat flour in your conditioner to try to thicken up your locks. You can also beat a single, large egg and massage it into your hair, being careful not to get any of the egg into your mouth or eyes.

Let the egg sit for five to 10 minutes and then rinse. Do not use hot water to rinse or you may cook the egg in your hair, making it difficult to remove. Eggs provide essential vitamins and proteins believed to strengthen and thicken brittle hair.

Rinse With Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar helps stave off thinning by removing the impurities and product build-up that can be blocks the follicles of your hair. After you wash you hair, rinse it with a cup of apple cider vinegar. During the day, drink a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water to promote healthy strands.

Treat Your Hair Gently

Avoid harsh hair treatments, such as pulling your hair back in a ponytail and using a flat iron. Use a lower heat setting on your hairdryer, and using natural products or products with little or no harsh chemicals, can help protect your hair from further damage and thinning.

While coloring can help your hair look thicker using dimensional color techniques, harsh coloring products can have the opposite effect. Tell your stylist the problem that you're having with thinning hair, so that they can use the best products and the best methods to give you the result that you want.
