Calories in a Half Avocado

 by Carolyn Robbins

Learn more about the calories in half an avocado - which depends greatly on the type of avocado and its size.

The calorie count in half an avocado depends on the type and size. California avocados have a dark-green, bumpy peel, and are small enough to hold in the palm of your hand. Florida avocados are larger with a light-green, almost smooth skin.

Although avocados are higher in calories than most fruits, they can still be part of a healthy diet when consumed in moderation.

Total Calories

Although Florida avocados are the larger of the two types typically found in stores, they have fewer calories per gram. According to LIVESTRONG's food database MyPlate, half of a Florida avocado has 183 calories, along with 15.29 grams of fat, 11.89 grams of carbohydrates and 3.39 grams of protein.

Half of a California avocado, on the other hand, has 114 calories, 10.48 grams of fat, 5.88 grams of carbohydrates and 1.34 grams of protein.

The United States Department of Agriculture website confirms these numbers, getting a little more technical with weight measurements. You can expect the above numbers for half of a Florida avocado weighing in at 152 grams or half of a California avocado weighing in at 68 grams.

Considerations

Avocados are a high-calorie, high-fat food, but they offer 20 different vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. The mono- and polyunsaturated fats found in avocados make them a heart-healthy replacement for butter, margarine and other foods containing trans- and saturated fats. Avocados are also sodium- and cholesterol-free.

According to Healthline.com, avocados contain more potassium than bananas, as well as important antioxidants for eye health. They are also a weight loss friendly food, providing a feeling of satiety for a longer period of time than if you consume a meal without avocado.
