Gastritis is the inflammation of the lining of the stomach. Gastritis may either be chronic or acute. Gastritis is mainly caused by infection with helicobacter pylori, the same bacterium that causes stomach ulcers, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Gastritis may also be caused by alcohol abuse, long-term use of NSAIDs, ingestion of corrosive substances and autoimmune disorders. Gastritis may be treated using Nexium. Patients receiving treatment for gastritis should consume certain foods.

Gastritis and Nexium

Nexium, also known as esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that suppresses the production of stomach acid, which aids in the healing of gastritis, according to Purplepill.com. Nexium helps treat symptoms of gastritis such as indigestion, and heartburn, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Patients with gastritis caused by helicobacter pylori bacteria are usually prescribed Nexium and two antibiotics.

Gastritis Diet

Patients taking Nexium to treat gastritis may speed up healing of the stomach by eating protein-rich foods. High-protein foods help repair inflamed tissues in the stomach. Patients should ensure they consume low-fat proteins such as skinned poultry, lean meat, beans and fish. Protein with high fat content irritates the stomach. Fruits and vegetables are also included in gastritis diet. Low-acid fruits and vegetables contain flavonoids and antioxidants which inhibit the growth of helicobacter pylori, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Foods to Avoid

Patients with gastritis should avoid foods that irritate the lining of the stomach. Examples of these foods include tomatoes, tomato-based products, spicy foods, chocolate, peppermint, spearmint, alcohol and caffeine beverages, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Caffeine increases the production of stomach acid which causes further irritation to the stomach.

Nexium Administration

Nexium capsule is taken once a day one hour before a meal. Nexium should be taken at the same time each day, according to Purplepill.com. The capsule should be swallowed whole without chewing or crushing. Nexium capsules may be opened and the pellets poured in apple sauce and administered to patients with problems swallowing.
