How to Replace Oil with Applesauce in Brownies

 by Christi Flaherty

Brownies have been a part of American food history for almost a century and a half, with early recipes calling for up to a half cup of butter. Though many modern recipes and mixes call for oil instead of butter, they are still not diet friendly since oil contains around 120 calories and 12 grams of fat per tablespoon.

Brownies have been a part of American food history for almost a century and a half, with early recipes calling for up to a half cup of butter. Though many modern recipes and mixes call for oil instead of butter, they are still not diet friendly since oil contains around 120 calories and 12 grams of fat per tablespoon. With only about 15 calories and negligible fat per tablespoon, unsweetened applesauce is a great substitute for oil and allows you to have your brownie and eat it, too.

Measure applesauce in a liquid measuring cup using the measurement for oil in your recipe or mix.

Whisk the applesauce with the eggs and any other liquid ingredients called for in your mix or recipe.

Mix together dry ingredients together if using a recipe.

Add 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda to the dry ingredients or mix to counteract the acidic nature of applesauce.

Fold dry ingredients into applesauce mixture.

Bake as directed. Let the brownies sit for 10 to 15 minutes before cutting to keep them from crumbling.

Tip

Check brownies after the least amount of time listed for the pan size you use since applesauce can make the brownies have a drier texture if baked too long.
