Alcoholic beverages are not required to carry nutrition facts labels. The calorie content of alcoholic beverages is often unknown to many people. If you are trying to count calories, accounting for your glass of wine at dinner can be a struggle.

Caloric content of wine varies depending on the type of grape used, how long the wine is fermented, and the amount of sugar added to the product. To help eliminate some of the mystery, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has come up with an average caloric content for various types of wine.

Red wines

According to the USDA and LIVESTRONG's food database MyPlate, an average red table wine contains 125 calories for every five fluid ounces, or approximately 625 calories in a bottle.

Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon have 122 calories in five fluid ounces, or 610 calories per bottle. A Pinot Noir has slightly fewer calories — 121 calories in five fluid ounces, or 605 calories per bottle.

New to red wines? Start with a Zinfandel, considered one of the best wines for beginners. A Zinfandel has 129 calories for every five fluid ounces, or 645 calories per bottle.

White Wine

Traditionally enjoyed in the warmer months, white wines are served chilled. According to the USDA and MyPlate, an average white table wine has 121 calories in five fluid ounces, or 605 calories per bottle. Riesling has slightly fewer than average — 118 calories in five fluid ounces, or 590 calories per bottle.

If you drink Sauvignon Blanc, you will get 119 calories in five fluid ounces, or 595 calories in a bottle. Chardonnay is a bit higher on the caloric scale at 123 calories in five fluid ounces, or 615 calories per bottle.

Dessert Wines

If you are a fan of dessert wines, you may be surprised to learn that 3.5 fluid ounces of a typical sweet dessert wine will set you back 165 calories, according to the USDA and MyPlate, or 1,205 calories in a 750 milliliter bottle.

A dry dessert wine contains slightly fewer calories per 3.5 fluid ounces than its sweet counterpart at 157, or 1,146 calories per bottle.
