Olive oil and lemon-flavored water are two potential ingredients to add to your diet to lose weight. Consuming these foods in moderation may help you lose weight at a higher rate than with diet and exercise alone. However, weight loss is not likely to occur unless you follow a calorie-controlled diet and make time for regular sessions of cardio exercise.

Expert Insight

According to a June 2010 study published in the "Journal of Women's Health," a diet rich in olive oil brought on greater amounts of weight loss than a standard low-fat diet. Study participants were breast cancer survivors and those following an olive oil rich diet lose an average of five percent more weight than the control group.

Considerations

You can not use unlimited amounts of olive oil and expect to lose weight. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, one tablespoon of olive oil contains approximately 119 calories. Instead, use olive oil in moderation during cooking in place of butter and margarine. Small amounts can also be used to season salads, vegetables and pasta dishes.

Features

Lemon water can be used as replacement beverage for high calorie drinks. Soda, whole milk, coffee drinks and fruit juices can add excess calories to your diet. Instead, drink water flavored with a small amount of fresh lemon juice. If you replace four cans of 12 oz cola with lemon water, you could be saving an average of 544 calories daily, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Warning

Lemon water fasts or other extreme diets are not recommended methods for weight loss. Even if you temporarily lose weight, once you resume your normal diet, the weight will return. Speak to your doctor if you are following any type of weight loss plan that has you consuming less than 1,200 calories per day. Instead, lose weight by eating a well-rounded diet made up of mostly fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and fat-free dairy products.
