Herbal teas are derived from the leaves, roots, flowers and other parts of plants. While some herbal teas may have sour or bitter tastes, reflecting their level of acidity or alkalinity, once they are digested and assimilated, the vast majority have an alkalizing effect. This means that they raise the body's pH once they are digested and assimilated. Certain herbal teas are particularly noted and sought after for their alkalizing benefits. Always consult your health care provider when making any changes to your diet or lifestyle.

Chamomile Tea

Chamomile, a sweet fruity-tasting herb often used for teas, is alkalizing with anti-inflammatory effects. The herb inhibits the breakdown of arachidonic acid, an inflammatory molecule. Chamomile also has a calming effect on the nervous system and exerts antibacterial effects against several pathogen bacteria, including E. coli, streptococcus and staphylococcus, according to herbalist Brigitte Mars, author of the book "Healing Herbal Teas."

Green Tea

Green tea provides alkalizing benefits, in contrast to black tea, according to Mutsuko Tokunaga, author of the book "New Tastes in Green Tea: A Novel Flavor for Familiar Drinks, Dishes, and Desserts." Polyphenol antioxidants in green tea provide significant anti-inflammatory benefits that prevent progression of osteoarthritis, according to a study published in the August 2011 issue of the journal "Arthritis Research and Therapy." Consuming alkaline beverages and foods can help reduce the symptoms of arthritis.

Alfalfa Tea

Alfalfa tea offers alkalizing benefits as well as high nutritional value. It is easy to digest and absorb, which makes it particularly good for the elderly, whose digestive systems may be compromised. Alfalfa leaf is particularly helpful for managing cholesterol. It helps reverse cholesterol plaque deposits and decreases cholesterol levels. It also inhibits white blood cells called macrophages from attaching to the linings of arteries, one of the initiating steps in the process of plaque formation, according to Dr. Joseph Lee Klapper, author of "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Lowering Your Cholesterol."

Red Clover Tea

Red clover tea has alkalizing properties that contribute to a calm demeanor and healthy nutritional balance in people who have a tendency toward inflammatory conditions, excess acidity and infections, according to herbalist James Green, author of "The Male Herbal: The Definitive Health Care Book for Men and Boys." Red clover also contains isoflavones that were shown to be protective against certain types of cancer, according to a study published in the August 2011 issue of the journal "Gynecological Endocrinology."
