Soup is a versatile dish that can include virtually any type of ingredient in the meat, fish, vegetable or herb categories. Soup can be simple, gourmet, health-conscious, made up of leftovers or created fresh. A large pot of soup is often too much to finish in one meal, but you can freeze the rest to use at a later date. Reheated frozen soup is a quick meal if you are in a hurry or you are short on ingredients in your kitchen.

Stove Top Heating

Step 1

Set the frozen soup bag or container in a sink of hot water until the soup begins to defrost and can be broken into pieces.

Step 2

Turn the bag or container upside down and let the frozen soup slide out into a soup pot.

Step 3

Add ¼ cup to ½ cup water to the soup pot so that the pot won't scorch as the liquid thaws, and then bring the soup to a boil, stirring frequently.

Microwave Heating

Step 1

Set the frozen soup bag or container in a sink of hot water until the soup begins to defrost and can be broken into pieces.

Step 2

Turn the bag or container upside down and let the frozen soup slide out into a microwave-safe bowl.

Step 3

Cover the bowl with wax paper or plastic wrap. Poke two or three holes into the covering to act as steam vents if you use plastic wrap.

Step 4

Microwave the soup on low power until the ice crystals have melted and you can stir the soup. Stir the soup thoroughly so it is of a uniform consistency.

Step 5

Increase the power to high and cook the soup for 30 seconds to one minute or until it is hot.

Tips on Heating Various Soups

Step 1

Remove cream-based soups or those that include solid meats or vegetables from the freezer and thaw them in the fridge overnight before reheating. This helps avoids separation and ensures that larger ingredients are fully heated.

Step 2

Heat frozen soups containing dairy in a saucepan set over low heat on the stove top if you don't have time to pre-thaw them in the fridge.

Step 3

Avoid bringing frozen soups that contain eggs or dairy ingredients to a boil as you heat them to prevent the possibility of separation.

Tip

When freezing soup, store it in a resealable freezer bag or plastic container. Keep in mind that the liquid will expand as it freezes.
