What young boy doesn't dream of having big muscles? Born with sub-compact biceps, we all wanted to sport SUV size shoulders. Getting bigger muscles was a big priority.
Eventually, most boys grow out of that desire. Unless you're a bodybuilder or trying to get a part in a movie, big muscles aren't that helpful. Huge thighs and bulging biceps are good for running bakcs and super heroes but can make it difficult to find a clothes.
Though few people are interested in having big muscles, most everyone would benefit from bigger muscles.
There are many reasons bigger muscles can be helpful. Helping with fat loss is probably the reason that would interest the majority of people.
Muscles are what burn calories. If you want to lose fat, then getting bigger muscles will help. A pound of muscle requires much more energy to operate than a pound of fat. Cardio exercise is the usual path taken for weight loss. Few people think of weightlifting when they think of exercising for weight loss.
As you increase muscle mass your metabolic rate increases as well. Provided you're eating right, you will lose fat. Notice I said "lose fat." It could be that you won't see much change when you step on the scale. Muscle is heavier than fat so it's possible to improve your fitness and shrink your waistline without losing weight. It is likely that your body shape will change. That's alway a good thing.
What it takes to increase your muscle mass, and how much you can increase it, will depend on a number of factors. Gender, age, and genetics come in to play. You will want to take these factors into consideration when putting together an exercise routine and diet. Men will find it easier to gain muscle, as will those who are younger.
Regardless of sex or age, the only way to build muscle is through resistance training. The basic idea is to overload the muscle with specific exercises. This stress actually breaks down the muscle. That's not a bad thing. As the muscle recovers it grows so that it can handle that load the next time.
Resistance training can be done with machines or free weights. It is also possible to get a great workout from using your own body weight. Don't underestimate the power of the pushup and the simple squat. In time you may find it necessary to work with a personal trainer. It can be helpful to have someone who will push you past your limits. The results you get from working with a trainer can greatly out weigh the additional costs involved.
